The Defense Department has decided to delay funding for the Navy’s F/A-XX program due to concerns over the industrial base’s capacity to produce two major next-gen fighter aircraft programs at the same time.
Senior defense officials discussed funding for the Air Force’s F-47 and CCA programs at a House Appropriations Committee hearing Tuesday.
“We are understanding the value of it, but assimilating it into our institution is one I think we still have some work to do on,” Gen. David Allvin said.
Troy Meink will be the top civilian leader for the Department of the Air Force — which also includes the Space Force — as it undertakes a wide range of modernization efforts.
The Air Force also announced that the CCA drones will be based at Beale Air Force Base in California.
Troy Meink also told lawmakers that the Department of the Air Force must move faster on innovating new technologies.
Boeing beat out Lockheed Martin for the sixth-generation fighter jet program — which has been designated the F-47.
“Maybe [it’s] just symbolic, but it’s telling the world that we are leaning into a new chapter of aerial warfare,” Gen. David Allvin said.
If confirmed, John Phelan — a businessman and co-founder of MSD Capital — would take the helm of the department as it pursues new drones and a hybrid fleet of manned and unmanned systems, among other modernization efforts.
